A Study of Nurses¡¯ Recognition and Intention Senior Industry in Korea£ºUsing Mixed Methods

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify nurse`s recognition and intention to participate in senior-friendly industires in Korea. A questionnaire was used to survey 176 nurses about their perceptions in senior-friendly industries. Based on the results of the questionnaire, individual in-depth interviews were performed on health care profession to explore and understand the results. Generally, participation in senior industries was important to nurses. Of nurses answering the survey, 35.2% said they ¡°Know quite a bit¡± about the senior-care industry. More than 47% of nurses thought indicated ¡°Prospects were high¡± when asked about if they would participate in senior care. Also, more than 30.2% of nurses intended to participate in senior care ¡°Quite a bit.¡± Furthermore, almost half (49.4%) of nurses perceived they needed additional education to provide adequate care to seniors. Three themes emerged from the study: (a) Nurses recognize a need for participation in senior-friendly industries, (b) Nurses realize they need additional education to attain expertise in senior care, and (c) Nurses require knowledge of healthcare strategies, such as appropriate activities, to be effective in senior care. Nurses agreed that senior industries in Korea are important and want to participate, especially in senior healthcare. This research provides foundational data to understand the intentions of healthcare professionals to take part in, develop strategies for activities, and improve the welfare of the aged.
